Silicone Fillers

Silicone has been used by some physicians for over 30 years to correct naso-labial lines and scars and is known as a filler.

Injected droplet by droplet, it was originally thought that enough granulated collagen and fibrous tissue formed around the foreign silicone beads, encapsulating it and locking it in place. However, time has shown that silicone can migrate — especially from around fine-skinned areas — or cause allergic reactions. In the past many allergies were attributable to the use of poor-grade silicone; nevertheless, it is still possible for delayed reactions to occur, sometimes many years after injection. Any delayed reaction — which induces redness and disfiguring lumpiness — usually necessitates silicone’s removal, but the substance is notoriously difficult to extract without damaging surrounding tissue. Long term cortisone therapy is often needed to control the inflammation. Conversely, it’s also possible for the body to reject the substance, pushing the tiny beads out through the skin’s surface.
