Breast Implant Augmentation

The medical term for breast augmentation is augmentation mammoplasty, but it is also referred to as breast enlargement or breast enhancement, and sometimes, just a plain old ‘boob job’.

It is a surgical procedure that involves inserting a silicone or saline breast implant, behind the breast tissue or sometimes, depending on the particular case, below the chest muscle for additional shape, fullness and size of the breast.

Breast augmentation is a procedure designed to enlarge small breasts, make asymmetrical breasts more symmetrical or to simply restore the original youthful fullness that has diminished thanks to age or pregnancy.

Breast Augmentation Surgery

The breast enlargement surgery procedure is not a quick process.  From the initial consultation to post-operative recovery, the whole procedure can take several weeks, if not months.  Close co-operation and communication between both the surgeon and the patient is very important, so everything goes according to plan.

At the initial consultation, the size of the breast implants will need to be decided, together with the type of implant, where it is going to be positioned and the exact location for the incisions.

Breast Enhancement Benefits

Despite the possibility of ruptured breast implants and capsular contracture occurring after breast augmentation surgery, many women still opt for the procedure as they deem the operation to be beneficial to their individual case.

There are many benefits to a woman having augmentation mammoplasty surgery.  The obvious is the increase in size of her breasts, a massive improvement in self-esteem goes without saying, along with a more proportioned figure and a better choice and fit for clothes.

Breast Symmetry

Not every woman develops perfect breasts.  Many women are born with the potential to develop uneven breasts, but this condition is really nothing to worry about.

Despite it being Mother Nature’s small mistake as such, some women are self-conscious about having asymmetrical breasts, and because of this, they are able to have the asymmetry corrected either with implants, reduction, lifting or a combination of these three methods.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Every breast augmentation recovery process will vary from patient to patient, but after breast augmentation surgery, the patient should be able to move around by about 24 hours, and in some cases will be able to leave hospital before this timescale.

The patient will feel decidedly sore and tender for at least 48 hours, and then the breast augmentation recovery process will depend heavily on the degree of breast enlargement the patient opted for, along with some other factors.  Recovery can appear slow to the patient, and can take anything from a few weeks to a few months.

Patients who have reasonably realistic expectations will no doubt get the most satisfactory breast implant results, because they will already be mentally adjusted, but results realistically do vary from one person to the next.

Breast Augmentation Risks and Complications After Surgery

Despite there being many benefits to the patient having breast enhancement surgery, there are still some risks which have to be considered before making the decision to have the boob job in the first place.

Ruptured breast implants, rippling, displacement of implants, capsular contracture, hematoma and even infection. These complications of breast augmentation can disrupt recovery form the procedure and also interfere with the final results.  Some patients may need further surgery to correct any of these complications and even to remove the breast implants.

Alternatively, if you prefer the more natural way to lift and enhance your breasts, try some really effective breast lift exercises.

Revolutionary – Internal Bra System

In conventional breast augmentation surgery – reduction or breast-lift operation – the newly shaped breasts are held up and in their new position by the breast tissue and skin alone, but this new technique – the Internal Bra System – can provide permanent ‘built-in’ support, much like a bra, but on the inside of the body.

This Internal Bra System operation uses a material called Breform to support the shape of the new breasts.  Breform is a type of mesh, very similar to that which has been used in hernia operations for about 40 years, so has already proved itself to be completely safe. It supports the new breasts, taking the strain and weight away from the skin and scars.

Surgeons insert the cone-shaped polyester mesh underneath the skin of the breast and attach it with stitches to the fascia, a layer of fat above the breast tissue, under a general anaesthetic.

‘Breform is like a bra cup without the straps,’ explains Dalvi Humzah, plastic surgeon at the Court House Clinic.

‘Once it is fitted, over time the mesh gets incorporated into the breast, as the body produces a fibrous tissue that holds the structure in place – like a permanent bra under the skin.

‘In trials in Holland, 60 per cent of women who had the procedure went without a bra on a regular basis.

‘After the Breform lift, the scars are the same as in a traditional reduction and lift, but they don’t have the pressure of holding the breast up, as the internal mesh is doing that. So it’s unlikely the scars will stretch or the breasts will sag again.’
